Sicily With Kids: A Parent’s Guide to Traveling Well

Planning a meaningful family trip to Sicily

When families ask me if Sicily is a good place to travel with children, I smile.

Santi and I are raising our two girls here. This island isn’t just where we host tours. It’s where we do school drop-offs, stop for bread in the late afternoon, shop at the market, and meet cousins in the piazza while the girls run ahead of us.

Sicily is deeply family-oriented. Children are welcomed everywhere. But traveling well here takes a little intention.

If you’re thinking of planning trip, here’s what I’ve learned as both a mother and a host.

Sicily with kids: Choosing the Right Accommodations

Not every beautiful Italian stay is designed with children in mind.

The photos may be stunning, but by day three you’ll know whether your kids have space to move.

Look for places where children can decompress after full days of exploring:

• Outdoor space to roam such as gardens, courtyards, or agriturismi

• Family-sized rooms or connecting suites

• Pools with shallow areas

• On-site dining for those evenings when no one wants to walk anywhere

• Safe, walkable surroundings

In Sicily, agriturismi and boutique countryside hotels are often the sweet spot. Kids have freedom to explore. Parents still enjoy that elevated Italian charm.

If your children can’t run a little, you will feel it.

Pack Smart for Sicilian Summer

Sicily is stroller-friendly, but only if you bring the right one. Cobblestone streets and historic centres are part of the beauty and part of the reality.

What makes life easier:

• A stroller with sturdy wheels

• A structured baby carrier for babies under one

• Thermal water bottles to keep drinks cool in the Sicilian sun

• Small snack containers for long sightseeing days

The good news is that Sicily is very well equipped for families. Pharmacies are everywhere. If you forget diapers, sunscreen, or something essential, there is almost always a farmacia around the corner.

You don’t have to overpack. Just pack thoughtfully.

Go Beyond Beaches and Pools

Yes, Sicily has beautiful beaches. Yes, your kids will love the pool.

But the moments that stay with them usually look different.

Children remember experiences where they get to participate.

Making ricotta on a working farm.

Rolling fresh pasta in a family kitchen.

Walking lava trails on Mount Etna.

Exploring a village and stopping for gelato along the way.

When they touch, taste, and explore, Sicily becomes real to them.

Turn History Into a Story

Sicily is layered with history, but the way you present it matters.

Skip long lectures. Choose immersive moments.

Explore a medieval castle and talk about knights.

Visit a royal palazzo and imagine who lived there.

Walk through the streets of Palermo and tell stories instead of reciting dates.

Frame it as an adventure and curiosity takes over.

Build Connection With Locals

One of Sicily’s greatest gifts is its people.

Sicilians adore children. It’s common for shop owners to chat with them, for waiters to joke with them, for grandmothers to smile at them as they pass.

Encourage small moments of connection.

Visit family-run farms.

Shop at local markets.

Choose experiences where your children meet other families.

These spontaneous interactions often become the stories your family retells for years.

How We Design Our Family Journey

As parents, Santi and I built our late June Family Journey around these exact principles.

We select accommodations where children can move and parents can relax.

We include hands-on food experiences and working farms.

We explore history in ways that feel alive.

We balance activity with downtime.

And because parents deserve to enjoy Sicily too, we include one dedicated evening where our trusted childcare team stays with the children while you step out for a quiet dinner.

The best family trips take care of everyone.

Traveling in Sicily with children isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing well.

When you slow down and allow space for connection, this island gives back generously.
