Two Love Stories. One Island.

Updated: 2 days ago

How a Sicilian vineyard, an apartment in Palermo, and an unexpected friendship became the heart of Gems of Sicily.

This week has been so special for Santi and me because we celebrated our 10-year anniversary.

Ten years since we stood in the middle of a Sicilian vineyard and promised each other forever.

When we were planning our wedding, there was never really another option. We knew we wanted to get married at a winery.

It just felt right.

It felt like Sicily, warm, welcoming, full of family, incredible food, beautiful wine, and the kind of place where nobody is watching the clock.

Looking back, I realize our wedding wasn't just at a winery.

It was a reflection of the life we were about to build.

Every harvest begins long before September or October.

The grapes don't appear overnight. They're the result of years of tending the vines, trusting the seasons, weathering storms, pruning what isn't producing, and patiently waiting for the right moment.

In many ways, our life in Sicily has felt the same.

I've watched the seasons come and go, learned traditions I never knew existed, celebrated holidays that were once unfamiliar, and discovered that some of Sicily's most beautiful moments aren't the ones you plan for.

They're the ones that slowly become part of you and your family.

Year by year, Sicily stopped feeling like the place I lived.

It actually became home.

As Santi and I have been reflecting on these last ten years, I've also been thinking about how Gems of Sicily  came to be.

It didn't begin with a business plan.

It began because we couldn't stop sharing Sicily with the people we loved.

Whenever family or friends came to visit, we'd introduce them to the people who had welcomed us so generously over the years.

The family who always insisted we stay for one more glass of wine.

The producer who proudly shared their craft as though he were introducing us to a family member.

The little places we'd stumbled across that somehow became the memories we talked about long after everyone had gone home.

Every visit ended the same way.

"We never would have experienced Sicily like this on our own."

That's when the little seed for Gems of Sicily was planted.

Around that same time, a mutual friend back in Montreal reached out.

"I have a friend who's moving to Palermo. Would you mind helping her find an apartment?"

Of course I said yes!

The funny thing is... she barely needed me.

By the time we actually met, she'd already found an apartment, signed the lease and settled herself into a life in Palermo.

All without speaking Italian.

I remember laughing and thinking, "Well... this girl knows how to get things done."

At the time, I had no idea that saying yes to helping someone find an apartment would end up changing the future of Gems of Sicily.

Not long after, we met properly when I took one of Priscilla's cooking classes.

Looking back, I think that's where our friendship really began.

After that we'd meet for coffee or an afternoon of shopping and before long we'd be talking about adjusting to life here as foreigners, as women.

We'd invite Priscilla to join our family when we'd want to try a new restaurant. And she'd invite us into "her Palermo", the most amazing spots we had never even heard of.

It was never about finding the "best" places but about the people and stories we cherished or admired along the way.

It's funny how life works sometimes.

Looking back now, I think love was always the common thread.

Our stories were different in the details, but not in where they led us.

I fell in love with Santi.

Priscilla fell in love with Sicily.

And somehow, both of those love stories led us to the same place.

A friendship we never expected, and a dream we now get to share together.

The more time we spent together, the more we realized we were chasing the same feeling.

Looking back now, it feels like Gems of Sicily grew naturally out of that friendship.

We were constantly sending each other places to visit, introducing one another to people we admired, and getting excited about experiences we couldn't wait for the other to have.

One day we looked at each other and realized... Why don't we share this Sicily with our guests too?

Not just the places we've fallen in love with. The people who've become part of our lives.

Harvest season has become one of my favourite times of year.

There's an energy to Sicily in October that's difficult to explain until you've experienced it.

The vineyards are alive. The wineries are buzzing. The countryside feels full of purpose.

Everywhere you look, families are working together to bring in another year's harvest.

It's one of the most authentic times to experience the island, and one of the reasons October has become our favourite time to welcome guests.

Together, we visit wineries, cheesemakers, fisherman and artisans that have become deeply personal to us. We wander through cities and countrysides to introduce our guests to the Sicily that changed both of our lives.

If there's one thing these last ten years have taught me, it's that the best things in life are rarely the ones you plan.

I never imagined that falling in love with a Sicilian would lead me here.

I never imagined that a phone call from a friend in Montreal would introduce me to someone who would become one of my closest friends.

And I certainly never imagined we'd one day be building Gems of Sicily together.

But here we are.

Sharing the island that changed both of our lives with people who are curious enough to experience it for themselves.

I hope that when our guests leave Sicily, they take home more than beautiful photos.

I hope they leave with favourite people.

Favourite conversations.

Favourite tables.

And a little piece of this island in their hearts, just like we did.

With love from Sicily,

Dara
